Concept

For the past fifty years or so, due to changes in lifestyle and recreational activities, increase in convenience meals and food processing, and advances in technology and a decrease in manual labour, all of these aspects have had a dramatic affect on our health and wellbeing.

Here are some examples:

  • Lack of mobility
  • Increase in obesity
  • Increase felling of fatigue
  • Reduction in fitness levels
  • Increase in levels of stress
  • Increase in back pain and stiffness
  • Increase in sick days due to ill health
  • These health complications also have a dramatic affect on our posture, the majority of the population is becoming kyphotic (hunched back and rounded shoulders), with over 80% of the population suffering from back pain.

It has taken tens of thousand of years to evolve and develop into bipedal primates! Although, from a postural perspective, over the past 50 years or so we have moved back around 40,000 years.

Effectively reversing evolution!

What is posture?

The position in which you hold your body against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down, and the state of muscular and skeletal balance which will ultimately dictate your posture.

Structure and function

Structure refers to the position of the spine, if you have any ‘structural deformation’ caused by trauma (car crash etc), no amount of training will correct this.

On the other hand, having poor muscle function can create structural deformation, which CAN be improved by training functionally, both static and dynamically to enhance the state of your muscles and provide balance within your body. Ultimately improving your posture.

Factors which influence posture:

Work
  • Spending hours in front of a computer screen
  • Sitting at a desk, or driving for extended periods
  • Poor work station set up and equipment
  • Becoming one sided (always using your mouse with your right hand)
  • Standing for extended periods
  • Constant twisting, bending or lifting.

Leisure:
  • Watching too much television
  • Playing computer games
  • Becoming injured from impact sports, leading to inactivity
  • Lack of ‘proper’ exercise
  • Too much poor form exercise, over training

General
  • Having your wallet in your back pocket whilst sitting
  • Wearing high heels
  • Obesity, being over weight
